A ball mill, a type of grinder, is a cylindrical device used in grinding (or mixing) materials like ores, chemicals, ceramic raw materials and paints.Ball mills rotate around a horizontal axis, partially filled with the material to be ground plus the grinding medium. Different materials are used as media, including ceramic balls, flint pebbles and stainless steel balls.
In Grinding, selecting (calculate) the correct or optimum ball size that allows for the best and optimum/ideal or target grind size to be achieved by your ball mill is an important thing for a Mineral Processing Engineer AKA Metallurgist to do. Often, the ball used in ball mills is oversize “just in case”. Well, this safety factor can cost you much in recovery and/or mill liner wear and tear.

· Unlike many of the sites we visit, Atolia has tons of data out on the web. Its relatively modern past from 1907 to 2007 combined with its extremely convenient location only yards off Highway 395 has lead to dozens of explorer/photographer/historian types posting lengthy post and blogs.
Ball Mills are generally used to grind material 1/4 inch and finer, down to the particle size of 20 to 75 microns. To achieve a reasonable efficiency with ball mills, they must be operated in a closed system, with oversize material continuously being recirculated back into the mill to be reduced.

My mill is quite a bit slow for its size about 65 RPM, it should run near 100 RPM. Ball mills are typically run at about 90% of the critical speed. The critical speed is the speed at which the media simply centrifuges right around against the walls. Smaller mills need to run faster, the critical speed is about 42/sqrt(diameter in metres).

A ball mill also known as pebble mill or tumbling mill is a milling machine that consists of a hallow cylinder containing balls; mounted on a metallic frame such that it can be rotated along its longitudinal axis. The balls which could be of different diameter occupy 30 % of the mill volume and its size depends on the feed and mill size.

Ball Mills: -The final stages of comminution are performed in tumbling mills using steel balls as the grinding medium and so designated "ball mills." Since balls have a greater ...
A ball mill is a grinding device that is used to turn material into fine powder. Ball mills are cylindrical in shape, and are often the grinder of choice when it comes to mashing paints, ores, ceramic materials, and certain hard chemicals. By rotating on a horizontal axis, a ball mill can effectively convert a hard material into a loose powder.
